Acupuncture During IVF Cycles

Dr Ben Heathcote acupuncture Chinese medicine

I have been helping patients with varied health concerns now for over 15 years. And during those 15 years the popularity of acupuncture during IVF cycles has steadily increased. Many IVF clinics and IVF doctors are now recommending that patients undergo acupuncture during their IVF cycles. Monash IVF even has some of their website pages dedicated to acupuncture.

Many acupuncturists currently use simple acupuncture protocols or a 'one size fits all' treatment but this can be inadequate and is an out of date approach. The importance of a customised treatment should remain priority. When it comes to acupuncture there is never a 'one size fits all approach' because Chinese medicine is about treating the individual not the presenting problem. When Qi is in balance then the body will do what it should be doing naturally.

High level care is available throughout the IVF process and may look like the following:

  • Weekly treatment before embryo transfer

  • Treatment directly before and after embryo transfer

  • Weekly treatment after embryo transfer

The emotional strain and stress associated with mainstream fertility treatments are considered at each and every stage of the process and treatments may be altered accordingly. I always make sure patients are in a comfortable and stress free environment when undergoing treatment.

For women that have experienced multiple failed attempts at IVF or have experienced multiple miscarriage, recommendations are altered further.

For some patients I will suggest herbal, dietary and/or lifestyle recommendations that need to be implemented throughout the treatment process. All of the information will be written down for you and easy to follow.

Once pregnancy is established, acupuncture treatment is recommended on a weekly basis. Read more here.

Remember, when choosing an acupuncturist only see a practitioner that is registered with the government regulatory body AHPRA and who is a member of AACMA.

If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me. I am happy to answer your questions related to acupuncture and any aspect of health.
